William West Named Athletics Director at Prince George’s Community College
Largo, MD. - Prince George's Community College is excited to announce that William West has been selected as its next Athletics Director. A native of Washington, D.C., West returns to Prince George's with more than two decades of diverse coaching and leadership experience across high school and college basketball.
"I would like to thank Dr. Williams, Dr. Beale, and Mrs. Camp for allowing me the opportunity to become the Athletics Director at Prince George's Community College," said West. "I am incredibly honored to return to Prince George's in this new role. This institution has always held a special place in my heart, and I'm excited to build on its rich athletic tradition while ensuring our student-athletes are supported both on the court/field and, most importantly, in the classroom."
Most recently, West served as an assistant men's basketball coach at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he supported all facets of program administration and operations, including compliance and eligibility, communication and reporting, as well as staff and team management. During his tenure, he played a key role in guiding the Firebirds to the ECC Men's Basketball Tournament, where they secured their first-ever tournament victory since joining the conference.
Before joining UDC, West had a highly successful run with the men's basketball team at Prince George's Community College, serving as assistant coach (2016–2018) before being elevated to head coach (2018–2022). As an assistant, he was instrumental in recruiting and developing NJCAA All-American and MD JUCO Player of the Year Alex Morales, and leading PGCC to the 2016–17 MD JUCO Tournament Championship.
As head coach, West continued to build a powerhouse program with multiple student-athletes earning All-American, All-Region, and All-MD JUCO honors, leading the team to the 2018–19 and 2021-22 Region 20 Championship. During his time at PGCC, West was responsible for transitioning over 20 student-athletes to four-year institutions, with 17 earning associate degrees - a testament to his emphasis on academic achievement as a foundation for athletic success.
West began his coaching career with notable success after leading Friendship Tech Prep to a 20–4 record and division title in its inaugural 2014–15 season. He also guided Laurel High's JV team to its first consecutive winning seasons in nearly a decade, coached internationally with Japan's Yokosuka Pro Traveling Team, and helped McKinley Tech's girls' team reach back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in over 10 years.
Before his coaching career, West served in the United States Navy as a Quartermaster Petty Officer 3rd class. He received his surface and air warfare pins while stationed for three years at The United States Fleet Activities Yokosuka in Japan. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Maryland Asia Division and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of the District of Columbia.
