Gene Bowles Named Head Baseball Coach
Prince George’s Community College Athletics Director Jo Ann Rogers Todaro has announced the hiring of Gene Bowles as the next head coach of the Owls baseball program. Bowles will take over as head coach effective July 19th. Bowles will assume head coaching responsibilities from Coach Jimmy Williams who has served as interim head coach since longtime leader David Foster retired after the conclusion of the 2020-21 season.
Bowles states, “It’s great to be back in Largo, being given this opportunity to be the head of a program that means so much to me. Coach Foster and Coach Jimmy Williams have been instrumental in my coaching career and I look forward to continuing to learn from the best with Coach Williams staying on staff.”
Bowles is no stranger to the Owls program himself as he previously served as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2016, 2017, and 2019 seasons. While serving under coach Foster he helped guide the Owls to two Division III Region XX Championships (2017, 2019) and a second-place finish in 2016.
Bowles was instrumental in helping to improve upon the Owls 2016 (19-25) season record to an impressive 33-15 the very next season in 2017. The Owls 2017 squad went on to win the District D Championship and earn a berth in the NJCAA World Series at Pioneer Park in Greeneville, Tennessee.
Bowles primarily worked as a pitching coach and recruiting coordinator during his first stint at Prince George’s before he also began assisting with the athletic departments day-to-day operations as an athletic aide in 2019 to go along with his coaching duties.
Between his stops at Prince George’s, Bowles worked as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College and as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Bethany College. He’s also a former American Legion head coach and high school baseball coach. Bowles also coached in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League for the Brewster Whitecaps under Manager Jamie Shevchik in the summer of 2019. That summer produced multiple MLB draft picks in the 2020 and 2021 drafts. Coach Bowles was most recently the head coach at Cleveland Community College, a NJCAA Division II Region X member located in Shelby, North Carolina.
Bowles attended College of Southern Maryland where he obtained his associate’s degree in Applied Arts and Sciences before transferring to The University of Maryland where he received a degree in Public Health. Bowles most recently received his Master’s in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration from Western Kentucky University in 2018.
Bowles will immediately begin recruiting for the 2021-22 season and expects to field a team to be competing for the programs 7th Region XX title come next spring. Bowles experiences across many levels has provided him with a great network to help him put together a strong Owls team and develop a strong relationship with the surrounding community.
