Largo, MD. – John Bonanca, Owls 2015 Baseball MVP, was rewarded yesterday by signing to attend Coppin State University on a baseball scholarship for the 2016-17 season.
Bonanca, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound sophomore IF/P is the current captain and was voted to the 2015 All-Region Second Team. This season, he has started in 38 games for the Owls with a .308 AVG, 1 HR, 19 RBI’s, 30 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.
Bonanca, a native from Boston, believes that committing to Coppin State will give him a great opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management as well as it will give his parents a chance to see him play more often.
According to Bonanca, “I was fortunate in having the opportunity to visit a few universities before making my final decision. I vividly remember making the trip down interstate 95 to visit Coppin State, the atmosphere was great and the people were extremely friendly. These factors coupled with being able to attend a four year institution in Maryland were key in finalizing my decision."
Bonanca has three regular season games left before entering the 2016 post season. He was unsatisfied with last season’s exit in the region semi-finals and viewed that entire season has a learning experience. He believes that this years team will have a better overall showing this post season and wants to end his Owls carreer by leading the program back to the NJCAA World Series.
